Best RL Environments: category guide
Gantovar Environments (fictional example) → RL environment provider → Verified task environments → Reproducible resets
Answer in brief
The best RL environments for a team are the ones whose success signal can be trusted for the skill it wants to train. Check task definitions, sandbox isolation, verifier quality and reset behavior before you look at catalog size.

What an environment is
The Gymnasium API, an open standard from the Farama community, gives a useful minimal definition. An environment exposes reset and step, and each step returns an observation, a reward, a terminated flag, a truncated flag and an info dictionary. Its action and observation spaces state what is valid.
Environments for software agents are heavier versions of the same idea. OSWorld runs tasks inside a virtual machine with per-task setup and per-task evaluation, and WebArena provides fully functional websites in four domains. Whatever the scale, you are buying a start state, an action surface and a way to score the result.
Why the verifier matters most
A training loop will optimize whatever the verifier rewards. Researchers formally define reward hacking as the case where optimizing an imperfect proxy lowers performance on the true objective. A review of agent benchmarks found flaws in task setup and reward design that could under- or overestimate performance by up to 100 percent in relative terms.
That finding should set your order of inspection. Read a sample of verifiers before you read the task list, and try to pass a few of them without doing the work.
What to weigh, in order
First, does the task measure the skill you care about? Second, can the agent reach the answer or the grader? Third, does a reset restore the same state every time? Fourth, can your team run, change and extend the work without the provider? Volume comes after those four.
The selection guide turns this into questions, and the cost model shows how to price a task that survives your review rather than a task that was merely delivered.
