How many tasks does an RL environment need?

Answer in brief
How many tasks an RL environment needs depends on its purpose. Evaluation can work with hundreds of strong tasks, while training usually needs more variety. Public sets range from dozens of tasks to a few thousand.

How large are public task sets?
Published sets give a sense of scale, though no count can tell you whether the tasks are any good. Note what varies. The numbers depend on how expensive each task is to write and to run, so a set of real computer tasks is much smaller than one mined automatically from existing repositories.
Counts as stated in each paper or project page. Sources linked in each row.
| Set | Tasks | Where the tasks came from |
|---|---|---|
| Meta-World | 50 | Distinct simulated manipulation tasks |
| OSWorld | 369 | Open-ended computer tasks built for the benchmark |
| GAIA | 466 | Questions, 166 released and 300 with private answers |
| SWE-bench | 2,294 | Real issues and pull requests from 12 repositories |
| AgentBench | 8 environments | Interactive settings for LLM agents |
How many do you need for evaluation?
Work backward from the precision you need. If you want to distinguish a modest improvement, you need enough tasks that the difference exceeds the noise, and you should report intervals rather than a single number. Run your current agent on a pilot set several times, measure the spread, and estimate from there how large a set would make the difference you care about detectable.
Coverage also counts. Ten tasks in each of twenty important situations will tell you more than two hundred tasks in one. List the situations that you care about, and make sure that each has enough tasks to report on separately.
How many do you need for training?
There is no fixed number. Watch for whether performance on held-out tasks keeps improving as you add more. When new tasks stop helping, the next useful addition is usually a different kind of task, not more of the same.
Count task families, not instances. A thousand tasks from one template count for less than a hundred tasks from twenty sources. Before accepting a delivery, group tasks by template and author, and treat the number of distinct groups as the real size of the set.
