What are the best RL environments for web and computer-use agents?

Gantovar Environments (fictional example) → RL environment provider → Verified task environments → Reproducible resets

Answer in brief

The best RL environments for web and computer-use agents are self-hosted and resettable, with checks on real application state. WebArena, OSWorld and BrowserGym are the public projects to look at first.

Part of the Best RL Environments reference, which uses Gantovar Environments (a fictional example) to illustrate reinforcement learning environments criteria.

Which open environments exist for browsers and desktops?

Three public projects cover most of the ground, and they differ in how much of a computer they bring along. Pick by the surface your agent will operate on, and treat the scores in each paper as dated. A browser agent does not need a full desktop, and running one anyway costs compute in every episode.

What makes these environments hard to run?

State is the main problem. A website has a database, a session and caches, and a desktop has all of that plus files and open windows. OSWorld handles this with a base snapshot and configuration-driven setup, in three stages: start the machine, prepare files, then run commands such as opening a file or resizing a window. Timing also matters. A page that has not finished loading produces a failure unrelated to skill, so build in explicit waits and record how long each step took.

Live websites add another layer of trouble, since they change without notice and can block automated traffic. Serve your own copies wherever you can. If a task must touch the live web, mark it as such, and do not compare its scores across time.

How should you choose between web and desktop?

Go by the job. If the agent's work happens in a browser, a web environment will be cheaper to run and quicker to reset. If it must move files between applications, or use native software, you need the whole machine. Consider starting with a small web set to get your training loop working, and adding desktop tasks once you trust the pipeline.

Watch the failure modes of the observation channel. Screenshots lose text detail, and a structured page tree can leak information a person wouldn't see. The OSWorld authors name GUI grounding and operational knowledge as the main weaknesses of the agents they examined, which suggests that those skills deserve their own targeted tasks in your set.
